Year R Curriculum Lively Learning

All About Me

We start with home-visits to meet and greet the new children and their families.

We make special boxes that are filled with things that are special to us. These are bought into school to share with their new class mates and teachers. This part of the term is all about the children settling in and learning the class routines and rules.

Once Upon a Time...

We kick off our "Once upon a time…" topic with a dress up day.

The children come dressed up as their favourite characters and have an opportunity to share their favourite stories. Throughout this topic we learn about different fairy tales with a particular focus on two traditional tales such as; The Three Little Pigs and The Gingerbread Man. We will learn how to retell a fairy tale story using actions and story language.

This half term our topics are "Down in the Woods" and "Winter Winterland".

Down in the Woods

We begin the second Autumn term with a trip to Hilliers, to explore nature, animal habitats and seasons. The children will learn about woodlands and outdoors through stories such as ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The children will become animal experts when finding out about animals that hibernate. We will go on welly walks to find natural objects and use these to make natural pictures and sculptures.

Winter Wonderland

As the weather turns chilly our classrooms transform into winter wonderlands. As we prepare for our Christmas Nativity performance we learn the story of Christmas, learning different songs, dances and role play. The children will have the opportunity to experience Christmas at school for the first time with events such as a Christmas party, lunch, fair and making magical, glittery crafts!

This half term our topic is "Digging for Dinosaurs".

Our GRRRRRRRRReat topic to start the New Year is Dinosaurs! We will go on hunts for dinosaur bones with our magnifying glasses at the ready. We will share Harry and the Dinosaur stories together and looking at information texts to find out more about dinosaurs. To celebrate this topic we will hold a Dinosaur Day, showing off our learning and Dino Dancing.

This topic is all about growing, where the children will have the opportunity to plant their own seeds and observe how they grow We will find out about what seeds and plants need in order to grow when looking after them in the garden. When on welly walks the children will use their senses to explore the environment around them and notice signs of Spring. This topic will also lead into learning and celebrating Easter – how Egg-citing!!

This half term our topic is "Beside the Seaside and Under the Sea".

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside… The children will learn about all of the exciting things that happen by the seaside such as Punch and Judy shows and the fun fair. We will share stories from our parents and grandparents experiences of the seaside and how the seaside has changed over the years.

We will then take a ‘dive’ under the sea and explore the different creatures that can be found there. Our hook will be taking a visit to the Blue Reef Aquarium where we will get to meet the different sea creatures and learn about their habitats.

This half term our topic is "Passport to Europe and Moving on Up!!"

With our passports ready and bags packed off we set around Europe! The children will find out information from books and the internet to create their own non-fiction books about different countries within Europe. We will experience different cultures through many different ways such as tasting food, dancing to music, learning languages and looking at the similarities and differences compared to life in England. The topic will be celebrated by a Europe destination dress up day!

The end of this term will focus on moving on up to year 1. The children will get to know their new teacher and have an opportunity to spend time in year 1, also being detectives when noticing the similarities and differences compared to year R.
